Mount Moldoveanu, Romania

Geographic Location
Mount Moldoveanu with altitude of about 2,544 metres is situated in the mountain range of Fagaras in Southern Carpathians. This mountain has its twin mountain Vistea Mare that is only 17 metres lower than Mount Moldoveanu. Moldoveanu is considered to be the highest mountain of Romania. Victoria is the nearest town to Moldoveanu on the north side, and in the south side the Campulung is closer to the mountain.

How to Reach
By Air:
The Bucharest Airport is the nearest airport that is about 176 kilometres from the city of Brasov that can be reached by three hour drive on road. From Brasov you can choose to have a mini bus to reach the foot of the Moldoveanu. Sibiu Airport is another easily accessible airport, which is almost 145 kilometres from Brasov.
By Rail:
The nearby towns of Moldoveanu are well connected by rail links. The trains from Brasov and Sibiu stop at Ucea de Jos, a tiny station near Victoria. Another station of Voila can also be chosen to get down and take a bus from there to Victoria. From Victoria there are trails to take to Sambata Monastery.
By Bus:
The foot of the mountain has small villages that have well connected roads to the nearby cities. You have both public and private transportation in and around the Victoria village. You can also have a drive from Romanian city to the foot of Moldoveanu.

Tourist Destinations

  • The hiking activity is found to be easy but quite long at Mount Moldoveanu, so it is better to have a stay at the huts found on the way of your hike. The Valea Sambetei hut (1401 metres from sea level) on the Sambata valley is a well-known hut of the mountain range.
  • The Podragu hut (2136 metres above sea level), and Turnuri hut (1520 metres above sea level) are on the Podragu valley to serve the hikers who start their journey from the west of the mountain.
  • One more interesting thing about the mountain is that, there is no restriction for camping, so one can camp anywhere they wish on the way to the peak.
  • The peak can be climbed throughout the year except the winter seasons as the surface of the mountain would be plastered by snow. It is better to go through the avalanche report in winter before you start your hike.
  • The Lake Balea with kits stunning beauty makes your head turn towards it for some time.
  • Portita Vistei is a refuge found on the foot of the mountain. This refuge is at an altitude of about 2310 metres.
  • One more new refuge called Fereastra Mica col was built near the main tails. If you start hiking from this refuge to the summit of Moldoveanu, it would hardly take two to three hours.
