Mount Zugspitze, Germany

Geographic Location
Zugspitze Mountain is the highest mountain of Wetterstein range with altitude of about 2,962 metres. The mountain is situated south of Garmisch-Partenkirchen (a small town), and is bordered by Austria and Germany on its western side.

The flanks of Zugspitze has three large glaciers of German namely Northern Schneeferner covering area of 30.7 ha, Hollentalferner covering area of about 24.7 ha, and Southern Schneeferner with area of 8.4 ha.

How to Reach
By Air:
You can choose to fly to Innsbruck Airport, and from there reach Garmisch-Partenkirchen by 55 minute drive. The Munich Airport is another airport at a distance of about 102 kilometres from Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The Salzburg airport can also be an option to reach Garmisch-Partenkirchen by a distance of 217 kilometres.
By Rail:
The mountain is well connected by rail routes from nearby towns and cities. The Garmisch-Partenkirchen town has regular trains connecting to Munich, Murnau, and Starnberg. There is an electrified railway track in Garmisch-Partenkirchen connecting the town with southern parts of Germany. There are rail connections to Zugspitze that involves a cog train till Grainau, and from there to Eibsee, finally to the summit of Zugspitze by a tramway (aerial).
By Road:
There are regular bus services from nearby cities to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Eibsee and Zugspitzbahn. You can also choose to drive to Garmisch-Partenkirchen down the romantic road of Rothenburg.

Tourist Destinations

  • Hiking in this mountain is really interesting and you can choose from several routes available to reach the summit. The route through Reintal is the easier route. However route along the Hollental is the best choice to have a wonderful hike with the scenic beauty.
  • On the way to the summit, you can have a camp on Ehrwald, and stay for a nap in the nearby huts that include Hollentalanger hut and Wiener Neustadter hut.
  • On reaching the top you will be overwhelmed on visualizing the panoramic view of about 400 mountain ranges of four countries.
  • You can also have the fun of Sledding in this mountain range with special slopes and snow all the way.
  • A cable car runs to Zugspitze from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to allow you enjoy the landscape of the mountain range.
