Mount Finsteraarhorn Switzerland

Geographic Location
Mount Finsteraarhorn with an altitude of about 4,274 metres is the highest mountain of Alps of Bernese. The mountain located in the south-central part of Switzerland lies between the Valais and Bern cantons. The summit of Finsteraarhorn lies outside the main chain of the Alps range, and is surrounded by Lauteraarhorn and Schreckhorn in north, Grunhorn and Gross Fiescherhorn in the west and Oberaarhorn in the east.

Specialities
Finsteraarhorn, the 3rdmost prominent mountain of Alps is also the 9thhighest peak of Alps. The entire massif and the glacier found in the mountain range are the part of Jungfrau-Aletsch that is known to be the Worlds Heritage Site. This Jungfrau with its glacier hides Finsteraarhorn; however the summit of the mountain is visible from about 100 kilometres due to its height (4,274 metres).

How to Reach

By Air:
The Zurich Airport is the nearest major airport connecting main parts of Europe. From the airport you can drive to Grindewald in about two and a half hours on road. Then you can take a train to Jungfraujoch. One can also choose to fly to Interlaken from nearby cities.

By Rail:
There are well connected rails from Lauterbrunnes that can be reached from important cities of Switzerland. The BOB trains runs from Lauterbrunnes to Interlaken, and the WAB trains run to Grindelwald and Kliene Scheidegg.

By Road:
The Interlaken has main routes connecting major cities of Switzerland. There are also regular buses that run from Interlaken to Brien, Thun, and Spiez. From Interlaken you can reach Grindewald by means of regular buses operated to and from Grindewald.
Apart from all these mode of transport, the boat service operated by BLS from Brienz Lake across Thun Lake reaches Thun and Spiez

  • The Finsteraarhorn covered by thick layer of glacier is a challenging hiking spot for many adventure lovers. The Finsteraarhorn Hut of Swiss Alpine Club is available for a halt during your journey up the peak. This is at a height of about 3,046 metres. This hut is base of the regular path to the summit of the mountain.

  • The Grindelwald,at the north end of the massif is the major tourist attraction of this mountain
